UKRI Centres for Doctoral Training

We have developed curricula and teaching resources to provide students with the conceptual tools and practical skills to engage with the social, political, environmental and cultural dimensions of their work as researchers. In Edinburgh, our teaching centres around the CDT in Biomedical AI but we have strong connections with Centres at Imperial College London, the University of Oxford and the University of Bath.

We have developed teaching resources for Responsible Research and Innovation and run the following modules at the university of edinburgh:

Centre for Doctoral Training in Biomedical AI

The UK Research & Innovation Centre for Doctoral Training in Biomedical AI is training a new cadre of scientists at the intersection of computer science and biomedicine to build AI systems that are effective, sensitive to social context, and empowering to scientists and users alike. The Centre stands at the intersection of AI, biomedicine and social sciences. Our team leads social scientific training for students across their PhD programme, starting with the introductory module, Foundations in Responsible Research & Innovation_ (See here and here).

Responsible Research and Innovation in the Mathematical Sciences

We have been working with other mathematically-focused centres for doctoral training to develop shorter-format discussion-based curricula that introduce students to key ideas and perspectives for understanding the social contexts of mathematical sciences and their implications for ethical and responsible research. We began by partnering with the Maxwell Institute Graduate School, focusing on its Mathematical Modelling, Analysis and Computation CDT (MAC-MIGS), and have since developed custom trainings with CDTs in Oxford, London, and Bath.

Michael Barany leads our training on RRI in the Mathematical Sciences. Contact him for more information.
